How To Care For Your Succulents [3 Top Tips]
"Ahh what did I do! 😱" - that's me when I see my dying succulent when I first started out 🙁
Does this sound familiar? Despite your best efforts, your jet beads are dropping leaves and that little gem you’ve been lovingly watering is wizened and wrinkled.
Fast forward to this day, and I'd like to spare all my friends the headache and heartbreak of watching your little succulent die in front of your eyes. So here are three common mistakes and associated top tips on how to care for your succulents to get those beauties to their glory days!
1. Watering Them Too Much
Picture this - you heard/ found guides raving about how you should always submerge the entire pot and plant in water till everything drains out from the pot’s drainage holes, around once every couple of months. With this new found knowledge, you happily soak your lovely succulent babies confidently. BUT WHAT HAPPENED?! Why have they turned black and mushy within days?!?!
Well, here's what happened. Differing climates.
Those instructional videos and tutorials aren’t wrong per se, in fact they were right - For their temperate climate.
In comparison, temperatures and humidity in Singapore are much higher than those in the tutorials. Hence if you were to submerge your entire pot of succulent, water content in these babies bed (soil) will be overflowing and unable to evaporate in time due to high humidity in our SG air.
Tip #1:
- Avoid soaking your entire succulent in water
2. Not Watering Them Enough
That said, don't artificially create a sahara desert environment for your succulents either! Instead we'd recommend around 10 to 20 ml of water, once a week, directly into the soil.
This allows your plant to have all the moisture it needs to thrive and survive. While ensure that it's not excessive that causes the roots to begin rotting. PS. increasing the watering frequency to once a week will also ensure your succulent babies look healthy and glowing!
Tip #2:
- Water roughly 10 to 20 ml of water, once a week, directly into the soil of your succulent.
3. Putting Them In a Poorly Lit Space
Come on... if someone were to trap you in a gloomy dark space all day, tell me you'd like that. Similarly, when it comes to your succulent, natural light is a plant's best friend. Specifically, when it comes to succulent plants, they prefer:
- To be kept indoors
- Away from harsh temperatures or wet conditions
That said, they still require a substantial amount of sunlight in order for them to maintain their form.
Tip #3:
- Ideally, we would recommend them to be placed in an air-conditioned environment with ample indirect sunlight
- However if that's not possible, no worries! The best alternatively is to place them recommend under growth-lights in a room-temperature environment.
